Presenting our premium Large Blank firesteel Ferrocerium flint rods, carefully crafted for optimal performance. These robust rods guarantee exceptional reliability for all your fire-starting requirements.

Firesteel size & use guide

This rod is 12.7mm × 127mm. Compare approximate diameter × total length below; fitting a handle reduces the exposed length.

Compare firesteel sizes
Size	Carry	Handling
6mm × 60mm	Compact pocket-kit option.	Short, slim grip; consider a handle for gloves.
6mm × 75mm	Slim, with 15mm more length than the 60mm rod.	More length to work with, but the same slim diameter.
8mm × 80mm	Middle option between pocket and larger kit rods.	Thicker and longer than the 6mm rods.
8mm × 100mm	Longer option; check pocket or pouch space.	Extra length for grip and scraping.
10mm × 100mm	Bulkier choice for a larger kit.	More diameter to hold; consider for gloves, though handle shape matters too.
12.7mm × 127mm (this rod)	Largest option here; check storage space.	Prioritises grip space over compact carry. Check scraper options and availability.

Spark quantity: Size alone does not guarantee a bigger spark shower. A longer exposed rod gives room for a longer scraping stroke; alloy, striker, pressure and technique also affect spark quantity. These sizes have not been compared in measured spark-output tests.

Drilling & knife projects: Drilling suitability has not been verified for this comparison. Do not assume any size is suitable for drilling with a knife or drill; choose a purpose-made holed rod for a lanyard hole. For knife-handle or sheath projects, check the maker's diameter, length and fitting requirements.

Please note these Large Blank firesteel rods are often referred to by various names, with 'firesteels' being our preferred title. Other aliases include Ferro or Ferrocerium rods, which denote the material they are constructed from, and 'Modern flint', 'Magnesium rod' or 'Flint Fire Starter,' highlighting their traditional resemblance to flint and steel fire-making techniques.

When the flint meets the steel striker, a spark is ignited, providing the perfect opportunity to ignite tinder. Whether you opt for shredded tinder or cotton wool, these durable tools pave the way for hassle-free fire building. Add kindling on top as the fire catches, and watch your flames grow into a roaring fire with ease.

Thousands of lights!

Experience the magic as these rods emit showers of long-lasting sparks exceeding temperatures of over 3000 degrees Fahrenheit when scraped against a hard steel surface. Whether you're using a knife, hacksaw blade, or a trusty key, the efficiency of these firesteels is unmatched.

Available with or without a Black or Silver striker, Strikers or Scrapers

Enhance your fire-starting experience with our specially designed steel serrated strikers in sleek Black or Silver finishes. Resembling a large washer, these strikers offer a user-friendly design that ensures efficient spark production when used with our firesteels.

Unleash your creativity by crafting a personalized handle for these versatile blanks, allowing you to tailor your fire-starting tool to your unique style.
