10mm Scotch Eyed Auger

A scotch eyed auger is a type of hand-held woodworking tool used for boring holes in wood. It consists of a long, cylindrical shaft with a spiral fluted cutting edge at one end, and a small, circular opening at the other end called the "eye." The "eye" is used to insert and guide the tool through the wood, while the cutting edge is used to carve out a circular hole.

Features:

Compact
Portable
Lightweight
Robust
Rotating helical screw blade for easy swarf removal
Barrel Scotch eye through which a stick can be improvised to create a handle.

What are they used for?

They can be used for a variety of purposes, including:

Making holes for dowels: Scotch eyed augers are commonly used to create holes for dowels, which are small, cylindrical wooden pegs used to join two pieces of wood together.
Creating pilot holes: Scotch eyed augers can be used to create pilot holes for screws, nails, and other fasteners. These holes help prevent the wood from splitting when the fastener is inserted.
Carving mortises: A mortise is a rectangular hole cut into a piece of wood to receive a tenon (a protruding wooden piece) of another piece of wood to create a joint. Scotch eyed augers can be used to carve out the initial holes for the mortise.
Making pegs: Scotch eyed augers can be used to create wooden pegs, which are used to secure joints or to plug holes.
Creating decorative features: Scotch eyed augers can be used to create decorative features in woodworking projects, such as adding holes for ornamental designs.

Overall, scotch eyed augers are versatile tools that can be used for a range of woodworking tasks, making them a valuable addition to any woodworker's toolbox.
