Gill Nets
A gill net is a type of fishing net that is used to catch fish in the water. It is typically made of monofilament or multifilament nylon or other synthetic materials and is designed to be suspended vertically in the water column, with weights at the bottom and floats at the top to keep it in place. The mesh size of the net is designed to allow the head of the fish to pass through, but then to entangle the gills, preventing the fish from escaping.
Gill nets can be used in both freshwater and saltwater environments and can be set up in a variety of ways depending on the type of fish being targeted and the local fishing regulations. They are often used by commercial fishermen to catch large quantities of fish but can also be used by recreational fishermen in certain situations. However, their use is often controversial, as they can accidentally catch and harm other marine life such as dolphins, sea turtles, and seabirds. In some areas, the use of gill nets is heavily regulated or banned altogether in order to protect vulnerable marine species.
