These Ferrocerium flint rods are approx. 4mm by 20mm. Hundreds of lights! When you scrape them with the piece of hard serrated steel (in the second half of the buckle), these emit long lasting sparks of over 3000 degrees.
Tinder can be used to catch the spark; it should be shredded up and unravelled and formed into a sort of nest, cotton wool works very well. Put more kindling on top as it catches alight and you can build a fire from there.
